“Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.“
To be a marketing rock star, you have to possess all three forms of greatness:
- Embody a spirit of innovation and leadership (born great)
- Have an appetite for taking risk and leading change (achieve greatness)
- The ability to innovate in the face of great challenges
Cindy Humphrey, VP of Product and Marketing for CenturyLink Business truly embodies this definition of rock star. (I know, because I have worked closely with her and her team over the past two years). Her status has also been validated by the Direct Marketing Association (DMA), they just named her the 2011 B2B Marketer of the Year. Congratulations Cindy!
Humphrey joins a group of other recent winners including, Kathleen Barrett of Hewlett Packard, Debbie Oenning of Sterling Commerce (another client rock star I’ve had the pleasure of working with), and J. Douglas Lackey of Xerox Corporation, among recent winners.
In a press release, issued by the DMA on September 7, 2011 some great insights were shared about her selection for this prestigious award:
“By selecting Cindy as the 2011 B2B Marketer of the Year Award, we are really acknowledging her creative leadership and bottom line results,” said Neil O’Keefe, DMA’s Vice President, Multichannel Segments. “Her ambitious campaigns weave together technology innovation, marketing ingenuity, and unprecedented customization.”
Cindy’s “greatest hits” have been best summarized by her peers, partners and team.
“It’s easy to get caught in an attitude of ‘this is the way we’ve always done things, so this is the way we continue to do things’. Pushing into new areas, taking some risk to innovate and drive change is what the organization requires these days. And when you see people like Cindy drive that innovation and change, it’s incredibly powerful.”
–Chris Ancell, President, CenturyLink Business
“This award validates the risk we’ve taken over the years and energizes our team to continue on with the spirit of innovation.”
–Joanne Kernie, Director of Marketing, CenturyLink Business
“Cindy really established a vision for our organization. Not only was it a vision but it was also the courage to make the changes… And she backed it up by establishing discipline and how we measure our results and change our trajectory.”
–Lee Suro, Director of Product Marketing, eBusiness and Content Strategy, CenturyLink Business
“Cindy and her team embodied a willingness to innovate, to look for opportunities, take risks and try new things — and that’s a great way to open up new market opportunities.”
–Eric Wittlake, Media Director, Babcock & Jenkins (CenturyLink’s B2B Demand Generation Agency)
Cindy has done a marvelous job of setting a course and a vision for her team.
